Geography
Russia  is a country extending over much of northern Eurasia. At 17,075,400 square kilometers or 11, 46 %, Russia is by far the largest country in the world, 3.jpgcovering more than an eighth of the Earth’s land area, larger than Canada.  Russia shares land borders with 18 countries: Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. It also has maritime borders with Japan and the United States.
Russia has the world's greatest reserves of mineral and energy resources and is considered an energy superpower. It has the world's largest forest reserves and its lakes contain approximately one-quarter of the world's unfrozen fresh water.
The capital of Russia is Moscow. There are 11 cities with population more than 1 million: Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Omsk, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Rostov-on-Don and Ufa.

Climate
Russia is a vast country comprising a large part of Eastern Europe and the whole of northern Asia (more than half of the country is north of 50° north latitude). In this large country climate ranges from cold Arctic conditions to hot desert and subtropical lands. The most part of Russian territories lies in the temperate climatic zone.
The average temperature in January is from 0 C to -50°C, in July from 1 to +25 °C. The greatest amount of precipitations fall in mountains of the Caucasus and Altai –is up to 2000 mm per year, the driest area - Prikaspiyskaya Lowland about150 mm of precipitations per year.

According to preliminary estimates, the resident population of the Russian Federation on 1 January 2009 was 141,887,500 people with 73% of its population residing in European part of Russia and 20.7 % in Asian part of Russia. Russia's population is predominantly urban-73.1%.
79.83% of the population is ethnically Russian.

Russian is the common official language throughout Russia

Religion
Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Judaism are Russia’s traditional religions. Up to 50% of citizens of Russia have identified 2.jpgthemselves as believers. Of these approximately 10% are integrated into church life, others attend on a less regular basis or not at all.  The chief religion of Russia is Russian Orthodox Christianity, which is professed by 66-67 % of the population in Russia, Muslim 5-6%, other 1-2%.
