Portugal is a country in the west part of the Iberian Peninsula. The country is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by Spain to the north
and east. The country has a total area of 92, 3 square kilometers. The Douro, Guadiana and Tagus rivers flow across the border from Spain. The north of Portugal is mountainous, the highest peak being the Serra da Estrela measuring 2000 meters.
Climate
The Climate is Mediterranean.In the north of the country is marine climate. Summer months are usually sunny and the temperatures very high during July and August, with highs in the centre of the country between 30°C and 35°C, reaching sometimes highs of 45°C in the southern interior. Autumn and Winter are typically rainy and windy, yet sunny days are not rare either, the temperatures rarely fall below 5°C, usually staying at an average of 10°C.
In the south of the country the weather is warm and dry. Average January temperature is +5+10 °C, in July +20+27 °C. The sea temperature in summer is +20+23 °C.
Imports and Exports
There are no restrictions on the amount of foreign currency that can be imported into the European Union. However, travelers entering or leaving the EU with more than 3,000 USD (or the equivalent in other currencies) must make a declaration to the customs official. Prohibitions and restrictions on drugs, medicines, weapons, explosive materials and pornographic materials are covered by national legislation. Can import to the country duty free:
200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco;
A total of one liter of spirits exceeding 22 percent volume or undenatured ethyl alcohol of 80 percent volume (or greater) or a total of 2 liters of alcoholic beverages under 22 percent volume.

Traditional business hours are from 0900 to 1300 and from 1500 to 1900 weekdays.
Banks generally work from 8:30 to 15:00.Some banks in Lisbon or in tourists destinations close at 18:00, in large shopping centers banks work daily from 9:00 to 21:00. ATM’s "MULTIBANCO" works 24/h a day.
Normally the shops generally open Monday to Saturday between 9am to 1pm & 3pm to 6pm or 7pm, however other large shopping centres which are popular in Portugal and stay open until 10pm or midnight. The Monuments, Museums and churches open from around 10am to 6pm, habitually all museums and monuments, however, are closed on Mondays, and at Easter, when cultural life seems to cease completely.
Cuisine
Portuguese food is simple ingredients impeccably prepared. Based on regional produce, emphasizing fish, meat, olive oil, tomato, and spices, it features hearty soups, homemade bread and cheeses, as well as unexpected combinations of meat and shellfish.
National dishes are caldo verde or cabbage soup with potatoes and bacalhau is salted cod, the Portuguese fish.
Fish
A favourite fish is sea bass, which comes as Robalo. The most common of Portugal's delicious fish (peixe) dishes revolve around sole and sardines although
salmon and trout are also featured heavily, frog fish (tamboril) and a variety of turbot (cherne). These are boiled, fried, grilled or served in a variety of sauces. Caldeirada is a stew consisting of a variety of fish and shellfish with potatoes, tomato and onion.
Meat
The Portuguese love meat and they cook it according to the most varied and flavorful recipes. The sautéed or grilled steak "bife à Portuguesa", very often cooked in a Port wine sauce, is served throughout the whole country. You will prefer the delicious kid "cabrito" or the sucking lamb "borrego", Do not miss the famous "carne de porco a alentejana", made with diced marinated pork meat with red peppers and clams or the roasted piglet "Ieitão assado", golden and crunchy as desired.
Deserts
Portuguese people are sweet toothed! The Portuguese art of pastry has its origins in Middle-Ages Catholic monasteries widely spread across the country. These monasteries, based on very few ingredients (mostly almonds, flour, eggs and some liquor), managed to create a spectacular wide range of different pastries, of which pastéis de Belém (or pastéis de nata) originally from Lisbon, and ovos-moles from Aveiro are good examples.
The most popular Portuguese cheese, the "Queijo da Serra", is a sheep cheese, made in the Serra da Estrela region, where the highest peak of Portugal is located. Its smooth consistency and delicate flavour are very much comparable to the best Bries.
Wine
Vinho do Porto is a Portuguese fortified wine from the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. It is typically a sweet red wine, but also comes in dry, semi-dry and white varieties. It is often served as a dessert wine with 20% alcohol.
Some of the best Portuguese wines are: Vinho Verde, Vinho Alvarinh, Vinho do Douro, Vinho do Alentejo, Vinho do Dão, Vinho da Bairrada.
